COPPERAS COVE – A Bulldawg is among the nation’s brightest stars in math.

Ellie Carpenter, a fourth-grade student at Fairview/Miss Jewell Elementary School, was named a finalist in the National Math Stars program. Only 200 finalists were selected from Texas out of more than 4,500 statewide applicants.

“Although Ellie wasn’t among the national winners, she was invited to join the prestigious National Math Stars Pathfinder program,” said Director of Digital Learning & Innovation Holly Landez. “This program is an enormous honor, recognizing her exceptional potential in math. We are incredibly proud of her and cannot wait to see what she accomplishes as she continues on her academic journey.”

The National Math Stars Pathfinder program is a 10-year national program from National Math Stars designed to support and inspire young math stars’ journeys from as early as 2nd grade through high school graduation. This year marks the Pathfinder program’s pilot year.

To be nominated for the National Math Stars programs, students must either place in the top 2% of math scores on recent assessments, score 98th percentile on those tests at a national or statewide level or be identified as having extraordinary math potential by their teacher, no matter the scores.

“The National Math Stars program and its initiatives are elite academic programs recognizing some of the brightest students across our great country, making it an incredible honor to have an awardee from CCISD,” said Superintendent Dr. Brent Hawkins. “I know Ellie will continue to shine as she continues her school journey and be a student all Bulldawgs can look up to.”

The Pathfinder program provides students and their families planning and support for their math journey in school, advising in STEM opportunities, a supportive community among other math stars and other surprises and support, including a swag pack.
